About Us » Facilities
Thomastown Castle training centre is situated 2km from the town of Golden, Co. Tipperary. The property is set on 200 acres with stunning views of the Galtee mountains to the south. Originally built by Phonsie O’ Brien, Tommy Stack has owned Thomastown Castle since 1980. There are 85 stables in total with 2 separate isolation yards which are invaluable for new animals arriving to the yard.
The private facilities at Thomastown Castle provide an excellent environment for racehorses to be trained effectively to their individual requirements.
We are very lucky to have a variety of gallops from all weather to grass, circular to straight. The gallops include:
Grass: One straight 6 ½ furlong gallop
One round 1m 1 furlong gallop
All Weather: One straight 6 ½ furlong gallop
One straight 3 ½ furlong gallop
One round circular ring 2 furlongs
The indoor arena acts as a collecting ring every morning before the horses head to the gallops. During the bleak winter months the indoor arena is invaluable on the rare mornings that gallops are inaccessible due to snow or ice. Luckily the 2011/2012 winter was kind to us in Ireland and none of the preparation was interrupted. The same cannot be said for the ‘10/’11 winter when the tractor was on the gallops throughout the freezing nights insuring safe conditions for exercise.
